Aprons Take Over Spring/Summer 2012 Runways

Take a moment to think, what comes to mind when the word ‘apron’ is spoke/heard of? The kitchen? Food? Protective clothing? Either way, I’m 99.9% sure that for the most of us a fashion trend would not spring to mind… Well, the day has come where an apron is no longer the symbol of a kitchen, but instead a key look for spring/summer 2012 on the catwalks. Welcome to the year of 2012!

Throughout the spring 2012 runways were endless amounts of references made of the apron, in dress/wrap skirt form. It seems as though, protective wear for the kitchen is a thing of the past. Consider it now as high-end fashion.

Let it be known that aprons were used as a decorative feature long before this ‘trend’. Going back as far as the 16th century showed women wearing aprons over their skirts, which were elegantly embroidered at the waist area. There are two main forms of the apron in 2012: elegant and naturally simple.

Chado Ralph Rucci’s apron collection is somewhat of a mesmerizing collection. The collection shows a white apron that is made up of a curved hem, perfectly stitched pockets and an iridescent white plunged neck top. We mustn’t forget Fendi’s apron-styled dresses, which are bibbed and frilled in both a pastel blue cotton to a sheer black, which gives off the vintage inspired look. We also see dresses and tops that have apron backs with tie up strings, as well as wrap-around apron skirts, which gives that modern approach to aprons on the runway.

The use of a sheer fabric will contrast the innocence/stereo type of an apron style with a sexier and modern edge, as shown on the left.

…Ladies, get your aprons out!
